In Devotion the poet transports the original tragedy in time and place. Echoing the 18th-century Irish\, it lives now in contemporary Belfast where a young man’s male lover is murdered. The sequence charts from premonition\, in filmic scenes\, the first encounter\, the news\, denial\, rage (and an oath of vengeance) to the funeral and A—’s family’s chilling silence afterwards. \nOther poems range from memories of childhood and relationships with parents to the author’s own imaginary child. And just as she was beginning to finally figure everything out: she was feeling positive about her move to Liverpool\, she was starting to get on top of her uni work and had made some new friends. Now her life is in freefall and Fiadh is helpless to do anything about it. \nShe starts missing assignment deadlines\, stops turning up to class and doesn’t respond to any of her friends’ messages. Her nights revolve around random hook ups\, fuelled by drink and drugs. In 2021\, she was the recipient of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Emerging Writers Bursary in conjunction with the Irish Writers’ Centre. \nWalsh holds a PhD from Liverpool John Moores University in Irish Literature and Cultural History\, with a focus on Irish women writers from the north of Ireland.
