SUMMARY:Phil Harrison Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us in No Alibis Bookstore to celebrate the launch of Phil Harrison’s new book Silverback\, for what is sure to be a wonderful evening. This event is free of charge so book now to avoid disappointment.Tickets are available at the link below: \nBook your Free ticket Here \n \nIn a Belfast courtroom Robert Rusting is on trial for the murder of his father\, a former loyalist hardman. On the jury is James Fechner\, a middle-aged surgeon in search of meaning in the hushed rooms of justice\, inexplicably drawn to the younger man before him. After trial\, Fechner can’t quite return to life before those days in court. \nIn dingy pubs and rowdy boxing halls Fechner inserts himself into Rusting’s world in another guise\, following a compulsive pull to an aggressive\, unapologetic way of life. So begins a close friendship\, a relationship in which a battle for control is tacit but unspoken – and explosive. Silverback is a powerful portrayal of the complications of masculinity and of the line between fragility and violence told in an unforgettable voice. \n

SUMMARY:Mícheál McCann Book Launch - Devotion
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin us for a book launch of Mícheál McCann’s debut collection ‘Devotion’. \nYou can pre-order the book on our website here  \nBook your free ticket on TicketSource here \nAt the heart of Mícheál McCann’s eagerly awaited first collection is ‘Keen for A— ’\, a re-imagining of Eileen O’Connell’s heartrending Lament for Art O’Leary. In Devotion the poet transports the original tragedy in time and place. Echoing the 18th-century Irish\, it lives now in contemporary Belfast where a young man’s male lover is murdered. The sequence charts from premonition\, in filmic scenes\, the first encounter\, the news\, denial\, rage (and an oath of vengeance) to the funeral and A—’s family’s chilling silence afterwards. \nOther poems range from memories of childhood and relationships with parents to the author’s own imaginary child. There is a wry poem on animal homosexuality\, others on sea swimming and the satisfactions of a shared meal\, while an elegiac poem recreates the final joy of an RUC Constable in a gay bar before he’s shot by a member of the INLA. \nFor all the solemnity of its subject matter love poems leaven its atmosphere as Mícheál McCann’s debut glows with the sense of someone who knows he has ‘discovered the name of his destination’. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Trudie Gorman Book Launch - Trust the Damage
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Book Launch with Trudie Gorman to celebrate the publication of Trust The Damage. \nFree Tickets Here \n \nIn Trust the Damage\, her deeply intimate debut poetry collection\, Trudie Gorman explores the connection between class\, poverty\, and illness. Journeying from a council estate in the 90s to the fractured ecosystem of the present day\, she contends with the grief of losing her body to illness\, whilst also finding hope and connection. \n \nThe body in all of its morphisms is the main character here\, while memory\, legacy\, violence against women\, healthcare\, working-class culture and love ripple through the collection in vibrant coexistence. The poems are at once visceral and unflinching in their depictions\, yet always stretch towards the light\, capturing what it means for a life to bloom in the dark. \nWe kindly ask all attending to wear a face mask\, if possible. Kind thanks for your understanding

SUMMARY:Milena Williamson Book Launch

Join us for what is sure to be an unforgettable event. \nBook your FREE ticket here \nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/no-alibis-bookstore-ltd/t-vvkajdv \n \n  \nIn Into the Night that Flies So Fast\, the debut\ncollection of poems from Belfast-based Milena\nWilliamson\, the speaker journeys to the small County\nTipperary village of Ballyvadlea\, to investigate the life\nand death of Bridget Cleary\, in 1895 burned to death\nby her family on suspicion of being a fairy changeling.\nFusing docupoetry and true crime\, travelogue and\ndrama\, the book introduces a compelling cast of\ncharacters as the ill-fated Bridget\, her family and\nmembers of her community all come onstage to give\ntheir versions of events. In the ‘Interval’ of this play for\nvoices\, the speaker herself draws back from Bridget’s\nstory to reflect on her own new life in Ireland\, on the\nrelationships and journey that have brought her to\nthis interrogation of one of the darkest episodes in\nIreland’s past. \n  \n“In this shape-shifting narrative\, not only do we meet Bridget Cleary\, the woman inside the poet’s head\, but we are also given a startling glimpse of how aspects of Cleary’s story reverberate into today; of other voices that will always be an absence. A brilliant debut.”—Moyra Donaldson \n“A lyrical gymnast… ” —Rosamund Taylor \n  \nMilena Williamson is from Swarthmore\, Pennsylvania and has lived in\nBelfast since 2017. She has a PhD in poetry from the Seamus Heaney\nCentre at Queen’s University Belfast. SUMMARY:Catherine Gander Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us in No Alibis bookstore for the exciting launch of Catherine Gander’s poetry collection ‘Matches’. \nBook your FREE tickets here \nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/no-alibis-bookstore-ltd/t-qjgezrv \n  \n‘Matches holds its fierce and sudden light close to us\, revealing the hidden world of domestic violence. Inch by inch\, Catherine Gander explores the anatomy of abuse\, allowing the reader to inhabit the darkest and loneliest of places with her. Through deftly woven images and brilliant sequences\, we witness how a woman can be taken apart: this is echoed in how poems are dismantled before our eyes’ – Olga Dermott-Bond \n‘Matches is a profound act of witness. It testifies to the chilling realities of intimate partner abuse\, failed escape-routes and quiet\, everyday attempts at survival. Gander is a fearless voice\, skilfully crafting and elevating wounded experience out of a hidden place into a new home lit by language. How grateful I am that such a poet exists\, persisting against silence\, insisting upon difficult truths. Here is a book\, like a sharp balm\, that stings\, calms\, and transforms.’ – Annemarie Ní Churreáin \n  \nCatherine Gander was born in England and now lives in Ireland. Her poetry has appeared in numerous places\, including Poetry Ireland Review\, Poetry London\, On the Seawall\, Palette\, and Firmament\, and she is the co-author of the poetry pamphlet Sea Between Us. SUMMARY:Book Launch: ISDAL by Susannah Dickey
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of Susannah Dickey’s debut poetry collection\, ISDAL. The event will be hosted by local poet Sacha White. \nAbout ISDAL: \nShortlisted for the 2023 Forward Prize for Best First Collection \nThe much-anticipated debut poetry collection from acclaimed novelist Susannah Dickey\, on the subject of our cultural obsession with true crime. \nISDAL is a timely interrogation of the true crime genre. In the first of its three parts\, we follow the flirty co-presenters of a podcast about the mystery of ‘Isdal Woman’\, whose burnt remains were discovered in Norway in 1970 and who has never been identified. \nAt the centre of the book is an inquiry into our perennial obsession with female victims\, sexiness\, and death: ‘The death in question has already occurred’\, the poet observes\, ‘has occurred to someone sufficiently abstract as to allow us to romp gainfully\, guilelessly\, guiltlessly through a simulacrum of death’s corridors’. \nThe free verse poems in the final section both explore and – perhaps inevitably – enact the ethical ambiguities of the genre. Witty\, excoriating\, formally ingenious\, ISDAL marks the arrival of a thrilling talent in contemporary poetry. \nAbout the author: \nSusannah Dickey is a poet and novelist from Derry and the author of four pamphlets\, I had some very slight concerns; genuine human values; bloodthirsty for marriage; and Oh!. Her poems have been published in The Poetry Review\, The TLS\, Poetry London\, and Poetry Ireland Review\, amongst others. She is an Eric Gregory Award winner\, a prize granted for a collection by poets under the age of thirty. Susannah is the author of two novels\, Tennis Lessons and Common Decency. ISDAL is her debut poetry collection. \nBook your free ticket here.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Michael Viney's Natural World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to celebrate the launch of the writer\, artist and naturalist Michael Viney’s book\, \n“Michael Viney’s Natural World” \nThe event will be hosted by Michael Longley\, who has written the introduction to this beautiful new publication. \nMichael Longley will be talking about Michael Viney’s work\, and reading from his own poetry on the night. \nAbout the book: \nNot long before he died\, Michael completed this book\, which he described as ‘a personal popular narrative that gives a lot of my illustrations a further bit of life’. This highly visual publication contains over fifty of Michael’s meticulous illustrations in full colour\, accompanied by a personal narrative full of keen insights and observations on nature\, our relationship with nature\, and a growing awareness of our vulnerability. \nPraise for the book: \n“Michael Viney’s words and images are vital in both sense. The sense of wonder they convey so powerfully is vital for our survival on Earth. And their vitality makes us glad to be alive. His eye is as sharp as it is keen\, but it is always seeking out the possibility of joy. This gorgeous book\, which brings together his words and his pictures as never before\, reminds us how visual his writing is and how precisely expressive are his drawings and paintings. It throbs with the pulse of a life so richly lived and so generally shared.” \nFintan O’Toole \n“With the eye of an artist\, the soul of a poet and the discipline of a scientist\, Michael Viney brings a unique and compelling perspective on our natural world. His writing and illustrations draw primarily on experiences and observations in and around his one-acre holding in my native county\, Mayo. But his outlook is anything but parochial — instead\, he alerts us to the urgent need to respect Earth’s systems and tread gently — as he did — on this planet we call home.” \nMary Robinson \nBook your free ticket here : https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/book-launch-michael-vineys-natural-world-tickets-700895255577?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: Máiría Cahill - Rough Beast
DESCRIPTION:Máiría Cahill grew up steeped in the traditions of Irish republicanism and the shadowy world of the IRA: her great-uncle Joe was one of the main founders of the Provisional IRA and her grandfather was Gerry Adams’s mentor in the republican movement. From an early age she seemed destined for a glittering career within the increasingly successful political machine of Sinn Fein\, which was then enjoying the aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement. She worked in a radio station alongside leading republicans; the Sinn Fein offices were her second home. \nShe knew Gerry Adams and other senior republicans as family friends. But at the age of 16\, she was sexually abused by a prominent Belfast IRA man. When she confided in some friends she trusted about the abuse\, one of them told the IRA without Máiría’s knowledge. \nA year later the organisation came calling\, and forced her to take part in an inept and grotesquely insensitive internal investigation. She was subjected to round after round of interrogations by senior IRA men and women\, usually in a network of safe houses around Belfast. Doubt was cast on her account of what had been done to her. \nHer assailant was allowed to confront and denounce her. Eventually her rapist was permitted to vanish from Belfast while Sinn Fein and the IRA professed bafflement about his whereabouts. Gerry Adams emerges chillingly from Cahill’s meticulous account of her ordeal\, a mixture of smugly avuncular concern and denial. \nRough Beast is Máiría Cahill’s harrowing story of her life and of what she went through at the hands of what is now Ireland’s largest and richest party. That story is told here for the first time in full detail and with unsparing honesty. It is a story of unimaginable trauma and political corruption. \nIt brings to life a world of paramilitary secrecy and parallel laws\, but above all it is the story of one young woman’s defiance of the power wielded by ex-gunmen inspiring fear and silence\, and their influence over elected politicians. \nPre-Order your SIGNED copy here \nReserve your FREE space here
