A former university tutor in criminology and criminal law\, it was during her PhD studies at Strathclyde University that she penned her first novel: Garnethill (1998).The prize-winning author of fifteen crime novels\, she received the Theakston’s Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award twice. In 2019 she was awarded the MacIlvanny Prize for Scottish Crime for her thriller\, Conviction\, a New York Times Bestseller\, while The Less Dead was shortlisted for the 2020 Costa Book Awards best novel category.
